They will also begin to use transition words to help their writing flow. Students will be writing between 3-5 sentences to include a topic sentence and closing sentence. Your child will complete exercises in which they are required to write personal narratives, expository writing, and persuasive writing. Students will develop their writing skills through “Write from the Beginning,” which teaches students the various traits of effective writing. In 1st grade, students will work on their overall reading comprehension as well as learning to: Then they will apply those skills in their reading. Phonics is the foundation to reading so students will spend time mastering their foundational phonics skills such as beginning, middle, end sounds, long and short vowel sounds, vowel teams, consonant blends, and digraphs. This year, your child’s language arts studies will focus on reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and spelling using McGraw-Hill’s Wonders comprehensive Language Arts curriculum. While field trips often vary from year to year, some past 1st grade field trips have included trips to the Phoenix Zoo, Phoenix Children’s Museum, and Vertuccio’s Pizza Farm. All field trips will align with the curriculum and complement a specific subject, topic or course the students are learning at that time. Although they may seem like beginners, our 1st grade students are expected to work diligently to prepare for a smooth transition into the next grade, while having fun in the classroom and working with others! Each school year, the 1st graders at Noah Webster Schools will venture outside of the classroom and away from campus to attend scheduled field trips. Students will enjoy coming to school every day, seeing their teachers and friends, and working hands-on with some of the latest technologies. Students will begin developing their own methods of learning and familiarizing themselves with the 1st grade environment. Get ready for a fun and exciting year!
